Working with NURBS
Back
in Toronto, while Kasnot was working with his highly
accurate polygonal model of Kennewick Man, Fleury was
busy creating a slightly less accurate, but more
aesthetically pleasing NURBS model of the skull which
would serve as the main National Geographic illustration
for the Kennewick layout. Starting once again with the
cloud data, Fleury used Alias|Wavefront’s Studio
software to lay curves over top of the data, converting
every four curves into a NURBS patch. 146 patches later,
Fleury was able to hand off a relatively accurate NURBS
reconstruction of the Kennewick skull from which Kasnot,
art directed by Kirilloff, would later create the final
wireframe-based images for the Kennewick section of The
Peopling of the Americas.
